Rubella reactive in pregnancy

Can rubella be prevented? What does rubella reactive means? It causes a mild fever and rash that go away in a few days. Most kids get vaccinated for it with the MMR.


If you are positive for Rubella IGG (the antibody) then rejoice! You pass the test and are immune to rubella !

Rubella (German measles) is normally acquired through close contact, such as being in the same room with, and close to, an infected person. Rubella during pregnancy can cause problems. Rubella is an infection that causes flu-like symptoms. If you contract rubella in your first or second trimester, you may pass it to your baby.

Persons with rubella are most infectious when rash is erupting, but they can shed virus from days before to days after rash onset. When rubella infection occurs during pregnancy , especially during the first trimester, serious consequences can result. Although rare in many industrialised countries, because of the success of vaccination programmes, rubella continues to occur where uptake of the vaccine is low and in many developing countries with no vaccination programme.


The infection usually resolves without treatment. In pregnancy , rubella is indistinguishable from parvovirus B19. Rubella IgG antibody can be formed following rubella infection or after rubella vaccination.


A reactive result is consistent with immune status to rubella virus.

A non- reactive result does NOT imply rubella infection. Acquiring rubella (German measles) during pregnancy can cause miscarriage and other major problems, so women are encouraged to stay up to date on MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella ) vaccinations as a way to decrease the risks.
