If you get chickenpox will you get shingles

Can you get shingles if you never had chickenpox? How can you catch shingles from chicken pox? Can one get shingles if one never had chickenpox? What are the first signs you have shingles? When you get a shingles rash, it typically involves a particular “dermatome,” that is, the skin area supplied by the involved nerve usually on one side of the body or face.

Chickenpox and shingles are caused by the same virus.

Even if you had chicken pox in the past, you can still contract shingles. However, a person who has never had chickenpox (or chickenpox vaccine) could get chickenpox from someone with shingles. These people are considered contagious until no new lesions have appeared for hours. If , however, you do get it, being vaccinated lowers the chance of pain, and speeds up the healing process. But if you’re or older, you can and should get the new shingles vaccine, Shingrix, whether or not you remember getting chickenpox in childhood.

With respect, the previous answer is incomplete. It implies that one can ONLY get shingles if one has had chickenpox. This is MISLEADING, and I suspect may not be the complete answer to your question.

Many people who get chickenpox once are then immune for life. But can you get chickenpox twice? We’ll tell you how it’s possible to get chickenpox.

Doctor on Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, and More: Dr. Killian on can you get shingles without ever having chicken pox : No. Yes, you are at risk of getting shingles if you have already had chicken pox. In fact, you can only get shingles if you have been exposed to the virus that causes chicken pox (ie, varicella zoster). People years of age or older should get shingles vaccine.

Studies show that more than of Americans aged and older have had chickenpox , and shingles is cause by the same virus as chickenpox. Nearly percent of children who receive the vaccine will not get chickenpox at all, Schaffner told Live Science. If you are pregnant and have never had chickenpox , and you get chickenpox during the: First half (about weeks) of your pregnancy, there is a very slight risk ( to ) for birth defects or miscarriage.

Second half of your pregnancy, the baby may have infection without having any symptoms and then get shingles (zoster) later in life. If you have never had chicken pox as a child or adolescent, you can still contract shingles through someone with the activated virus. You will receive the virus, however, not the condition. In other words, you may experience chicken pox , not shingles. This is the only time shingles is contagious and it is indirectly.

Shingrix recommended for everyone age and older, whether or not you remember having had chickenpox , because most people have been exposed to the virus.

Should I still get the. You can’t spread the condition to another person. However, you can get chickenpox , which will then leave a varicella zoster virus in your body which can later reactivate and give you shingles as well.

Shingles itself is not contagious. Doctors can prescribe antihistamines to treat the itching symptoms of chickenpox. However, if you fall into one of the high-risk groups mentioned above, a doctor may prescribe an antiviral like acyclovir (under brand name Zovirax) or immune globulin intravenous, known as IGIV, to take within hours of chickenpox symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. At some point, it can then reactivate, becoming shingles.

If you are thinking of getting pregnant and have not had chickenpox , ask your doctor about whether you can be vaccinated. If you are pregnant and have not had chickenpox , or if you have not lived in the same house with someone who has had chickenpox or shingles , call your doctor right away if you are exposed to chickenpox.
