Veterans shopping at commissary

Veterans with a service-connected disability will need a Veterans Health Identification Car or VHIC, to able to gain access to the bases and use these. In addition to in-person base commissaries , all honorably discharged veterans can also enjoy online military exchange shopping privileges. Currently veterans cannot shop at commissaries (they can at the Exchanges) but the DoD is currently considering allowing veterans to shop the commissaries.


What is it and how does it work? The commissary is just like any other grocery store with the exception of its location.

Veterans need a Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) for in-person Commissary , Military Exchange , MWR access. While it’s true that veterans with a 1 disability rating from the VA can shop at the commissary, veterans who receive at least a disability rating from the military, are considered medically retired and do retain commissary benefits. Do commissary employees get to shop at the commissary? Should commissary privilege go to all veterans?

Shopping will only be available to veterans online and only for the exchange. There are currently no plans to open shopping at the commissary up to honorably discharged veterans.

Online shopping has come of age, and so has access to commissary items from the comfort of your own computer at home. A named person, who may or may not be related to someone authorized to shop at the commissary , can shop for an authorized person with appropriate permission and identification, according to the Department of Defense. An because the new benefit is limited to online shopping , traffic in exchange stores should not impacted. Exclusions and Reasons for Expanding.


The shopping privileges will exclude purchasing military uniforms, alcohol and tobacco products.
