Treatment of measles in infants

If measles still develops, the illness usually has milder symptoms and lasts for a shorter time. Elimination is defined as the absence of endemic measles virus transmission in a defined geographic area, such as a region or country, for months or longer in the presence of a well-performing surveillance system. It leads to severe rashes on the body which further causes viral cold as well as fever.


It still remains a significant cause of death worldwide, despite the availability of a safe, effective vaccine. It can prevent or at least minimize the symptoms of a measles infection. IG also can be used after exposure to measles in infants less than months of age and in people who have HIV or other conditions that weaken the immune system.

There is no specific treatment for measles. There are many strains of the measles virus, and symptoms can vary. It is characterized by fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, an enanthem (Koplik spots) on the oral mucosa, and a maculopapular rash that spreads cephalocaudally. Diagnosis is usually clinical. Treatment is supportive.


Vaccination is highly effective. Stay away from work or school for at least days from when the measles rash first appears to reduce the risk of spreading the infection. Of those, 40were hospitalize and 4to 5died.


After the vaccine program began, the number of measles cases was reduced by percent.

Even so, measles outbreaks still occurred in this country. Intravenous (IV) rehydration may be necessary if dehydration is severe. Vitamin A supplementation, especially in children and patients with clinical signs of vitamin A deficiency, should be considered. To prevent measles in children, doctors usually give infants the first dose of the vaccine between and months, with the second dose typically given between ages and years.


What it does have, though, is a low-cost vaccine that’s effective in preventing the virus. Its hallmark symptom is a re blotchy rash that starts on the face and spreads downward over the body. However, there are some ways and measures through which protection can be provided to the vulnerable individuals who are infected. If measles does develop, it may be a weaker strain of the virus and may last for a shorter time period.


Injections of immune serum globulin. People with a compromised immune system, infants , children or pregnant women who have been exposed to the measles virus may benefit from an injection of antibodies called Immune Serum Globulin. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a chronic complication of measles with a delayed onset and an outcome that is nearly always fatal. Measles vaccination protects against SSPE.


The treatment and supportive care for measles are necessary since they inhibit complications that can aggravate the baby’s illness. The measles virus keeps the immune system busy leaving the body exposed to other harmful germs. An untreated measles infection may indirectly cause the following diseases in.


Such treatment is recommended for temporary protection of the immunocompromised and infants younger than year of age. However, Ig therapy is comparatively expensive, requires sterile materials and an uninterrupted cold-chain, and is overall not recommended or feasible across an entire population for the control of large measles outbreaks. Recommendations for the treatment of xerophthalmia and the use of vitamin A supplements during episodes of measles are not covered in this guideline.

Existing guidelines on the treatment of xerophthalmia and measles in infants and children 6–months of age should be referred to in these cases ( 9). German measles , also known as rubella, is a viral infection that causes a red rash on the body. Complications were reported in one third of infected children younger than years of age. The virus has to run its course.


A child who is sick should drink plenty of liquids, get lots of rest, and stay home from school or daycare to prevent spreading the infection. Routine vitamin A supplementation is also thought to decrease measles case fatality in addition to likely reducing mortality.
