The rash usually appears about days after a person is exposed. Measles is an acute viral respiratory illness.

When considering measles , healthcare providers should take into account the progression of symptoms. The onset of the three “ C’s ” almost always appears before the onset of a rash and the rash starts on the face and head and spreads towards the extremities.

The classical symptoms of measles include a four day fever, the three Cs—cough, coryza (runny nose) and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The fever may reach up to 40° Celsius (104° Fahrenheit). The measles prodrome classically presents with fever (38°C), any of the three C’s (cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis) and Koplik spots (which are considered pathognomonic for measles ). For example, we clinicians look for the three C’s : cough, coryza (runny nose) and conjunctivitis. Another early sign of measles is the appearance of tiny, pale bumps surrounded by some redness called Koplik spots in the back of the mouth.


They look like grains of sand. Over this same three -day perio the Koplik spots disappear and the fever begins to fall. People with measles are contagious throughout. Her symptoms could indicate an allergy, a common cold virus, or something far more serious.
