Low rubella immunity during pregnancy

Why do I need to be screened for immunity to rubella ? In the United States, your chances of being exposed to rubella (also known as German measles) are extremely low. Told to stay away from kids while pregnant? It causes a mild fever and rash that go away in a few days.


Most kids get vaccinated for it with the MMR.

Has this happened to anyone else? I had my normal childhood vaccines, including MMR. When rubella infection occurs during pregnancy , especially during the first trimester, serious consequences can result. The most common congenital defects are cataracts, heart defects and hearing impairment. Since MMR is a live vaccine, the additional dose should not be given during pregnancy or within a month of when you plan to get pregnant.


You can get it while you are breastfeeding though. Women should make sure they are protected from rubella before they get pregnant. Infection with rubella virus causes the most severe damage when the mother is infected early in pregnancy , especially in the first weeks (first trimester).
