Civil service sick leave

Public Service Sick Leave Scheme. Up until recently only CSRS system employees received credit towards retirement for unused sick leave. For example, if a full-time employee with an 80-hour biweekly tour of duty uses hours of annual leave during a pay perio he or she will accrue annual and sick leave for that pay period since he or she is in pay status.

Vacation and sick leave will continue to accrue while an employee is using sick leave. In addition to the regular sick leave referred to above, Extended Sick Leave (ESL) will be granted to all eligible civil service employees at the rate of work days per fiscal year. The additional credit is determined by dividing the total unuse unpaid sick leave days by 260. For most members, the maximum number of sick leave days allowable is 165.
